Old Machinery, Betts Cove Mine, Newfoundland

Painting Description

After a full hour’s climb through the rocky treed landscape, we broke into the opening to see the lakes, and above those waters, the giant rusted iron wheels and gears of the old mine. We had been deposited on the shore along with our own guide, a mining engineer, with a promise that our boatman would return in four hours. I had been commissioned by an engineering company to paint some views of this land on which they had planned to do geological development. The paintings happened, but the new mine never did.
