Old Derbyshire Farmstead

Painting Description

The blue doors of these buildings were the first thing to catch my eye. Driving around the Dale country not far from Chatsworth, there are so many dramatically romantic views anchored by small farms. Many of these buildings are in poor repair and clearly little used, but this added-to farmhouse with its attached dependencies is still home to a farm family. As I painted this piece, I thought about how this rural set-up paralleled the Mennonite farm homes in our area. This strung-out series of buildings is familiar to me and perhaps the blue doors, attractive as they are, were not really the magnet that drew me to this subject.
