Old and New, Knole

Painting Description

Besides the fact that Knole is one of the seven great treasure houses of Britain, it was also the childhood home of Vita Sackville-West, the woman who created Sissinghurst. Vita’s association with Virginia Wolfe adds much to our appreciation of all the properties with a connection to her. My wife is very keen on the Bloomsbury group you see. This small almost trivial view of a stump and young trees does in a way symbolizes the history of this grand house as successive generations re-energize the great tree that is Knole.
