London Stalls

Painting Description

Street markets are quite common in London. This one in the Soho section is an excellent example of the energy that develops when diverse ethnic people compete against the Del boys of south east London. These fellows are independent traders who buy and sell just about anything. This is the territory of EastEnders, the long running B.B.C. T.V. series.

Being a fan of British T.V. and in particular of EastEnders and Only Fools and Horses, a visit to markets like this gives me a buzz. In with all the broken English, which has become the universal language, are spikes of “dead right mate” and “halo love”. I have always enjoyed accents and a street market like this is a smorgasbord of delights. A friend of ours says of me, when I do the various accents, it’s a good thing as he has no personality of his own.
