Hawkesville Ploughman

Painting Description

Set near Hawkesville, this painting springs from a competition at the annual Ontario ploughing match. The single furrow plough is a very difficult way to accomplish the task and would not be practical for a large field. Three- and four-furrow ploughs are used by the Amish and Mennonites to speed the strenuous chore. The team that I used in this painting reminded me of two horses that Maple Lane Dairy had when I was a kid. I used to go to the barn with my Dad, on what is now University Avenue in Waterloo, when he would feed these big fellows. I still find it hard to pass a horse without going over to it for a chat.
