Grand River Skating Party

Painting Description

This painting does not describe something that I have witnessed at the West Montrose covered bridge. I have, to be sure, many times watched as Mennonite kids made their own fun on a piece of ice. Sometimes the river is their rink, but any frozen patch in a field or farmyard will do. I designed this painting in a Currier and Ives sort of way because I wished this confection to show a romantic view of lives that many people think to be dull and charmless. I”m here to say, “au contraire.”
