Gathering Irish Moss in North Rustico, Prince Edward Island

Painting Description

I was attracted, as I always am, by the large draft horses used to drag the moss from the surf. After being rescued from the tide, great piles of this blackish seaweed are trucked to villages where it is sorted by hand. Ice cream, toothpaste and some beauty products contain carageenan the active ingredient extracted from Irish Moss. A secondary idea in this painting is the beached boat on the far shore next to the farm buildings. This work is really kind of “surf and turf”.
