Elmira-Wallenstein House

Painting Description

I was attracted to two ideas for this painting. The first was the splash of red against the pastels of the surroundings. Handled in a watercolour way, the subtle colour is displayed in only slight shifts of hue. The second idea that interested me was the neighbourhood of farmsteads along the road. I tend to forget just how close farmhouses now are to each other. As the agricultural land gets cut into smaller pieces for successive generations, we are developing a situation not too different from the small farms in Quebec along the St. Lawrence River.
