Bridging the Creek

Painting Description

Typical of small bits of landscape in the Muskoka region of Ontario, this piece of colours caught my eye. Perhaps it was the hues, some of which are almost pink, maybe the spidery skeleton of the fallen tree just off Limberlost Lodge Road, but there was some response in me. From the time that I was sixteen when I had painting lessons from M.F. Kousal, I have felt that I should paint some of the wild country in the Canadian Shield. I have never made a concerted effort to pursue that feeling. Perhaps laziness on my part has kept me from making the effort. Normally when I drive to Huntsville, I am visiting friends and that mostly involves drinking beer rather than painting.

Even though I paint many subjects, there is a strong appeal to me just to confine myself to landscape painting. Perhaps because I started as a youngster painting landscape with Matt Kousal, I find it very easy. I am sure that had I confined myself to that specialty, I would have discovered many subtleties of which I have no idea. One of the things that draws me to painting is the possible inventions that grow out of really closely observing the subject.
